Following a trial in August, the Hungarian low-cost carrier is rolling out its €10 charge for “large” cabin baggage across all flights

The fee was first introduced on the London Luton-Katowice route on August 1 (see online report here), to encourage passengers to travel with small bags measuring less than 42cm x 32cm x 25cm 99cm). Those flying with a single piece no larger than these dimensions could do so for free.

The trial was carried out in a bid to combat having "too many" cabin bags on board, although the carrier has a "one bag" rule for carry on. Nevertheless Wizzair says: “Bags are routinely off-loaded by airline crews due to lack of space, often causing delays.”

The new rules mean that anyone travelling with a larger piece of cabin baggage up to 56cm x 45cm x 25cm (115cm) will have to pay €10. Bags larger than this have to be checked in, costing €45 at the airport or €60 at the gate.

The previous weight restriction of 10kg per bag has been dropped, with passengers only required to be able to lift them safely and place them in the overhead bins.

According to website travelmole.com, the new policy will apply to flights leaving after October 24 and the airline claims all airfares will be discounted by £4 to share the savings made by the scheme.
