Vueling (airline code VY) is a budget airline operating from Barcelona's El Prat airport with smaller bases at Valencia, Malaga, Seville, La Coruña and Bilbao. Vueling completed its merger with rival Clickair in July 2009.

Ownership

Vueling was set up in 2004, backed by three private investment companies and JetBlue Airways, which had a 7% share. Clickair began flying in October 2006 with Iberia as a 20% shareholder. Iberia used Clickair to transfer some of its less profitable routes to a low-cost formula using its landing slots at airports like Heathrow.

Following the merger, Iberia took a 45% share in the combined company, planning to expand it as a budget brand. Iberia is exempt from making a full bid for the carrier, which would normally be triggered at the 30% investment level. Nearly 39% of the shares are in "free float" on the Spanish Stock Exchange.

Route Network

Vueling has an extensive domestic network in Spain and also serves the UK, Continental Europe, Russia, North Africa and the Middle East. The airline is Barcelona's biggest carrier, with 90 routes and 14 million passengers.

Other Information

Vueling's fleet now comprises 35 Airbus A320s. All are fitted with the maximum 180 seats, the standard budget airline layout.
