Pitched between business and first (in price, as well as product), Upper Class prefers to describe itself as a first class experience at a business class fare.
Upper Class is extremely popular, not only because of the seat, but because of the service, lounges (Clubhouses) and onboard bar.
The Upper Class bed is fully flat; 79.5" (202cm) long (82"/208cm on the upper deck) and 33" (84cm) wide across the shoulder area. What's innovative is the herring bone design (referring to the way it looks on the aircraft) and the fact that the seat flips rather than just simply reclining. This allows for different materials to be used on each side for optimum seating and sleeping comfort. The herring bone design means that everyone gets an aisle seat.
Unlike other ottoman seats, this one is strong enough for a companion to join you (it has a seat belt for this purpose) and has extra storage underneath.
All seats have a 10.4" personal TV screen, laptop power and a large table. The onboard stand-up bar is always a popular option.
Virgin revealed its brand new Upper Class 'suite' in April 2012.
The new seat is still configured in herringbone layout but features an increase in width of 1.5 inches and is 87 inches long with 50 per cent more recline when in the seated mode.
Each seat has a 12.1 inch touchscreen monitor with a touchscreen handset, loaded with the JAM entertainment system. This includes ports to charge and use your own devices onboard. Virgin also boasts that all A330 aircraft have the AeroMobile system installed so you can make and receive phone calls and send texts from your own mobile phone while in the air.
The airline says that the new seat will be fitted on its A330 aircraft starting in April 2012 with the flights between Heathrow and New York JFK and on its forthcoming Boeing 787 Dreamliner from 2014. More A330 routes with the new offering will be added as further aircraft are delivered.
