United was the first American carrier to get the Dreamliner, which it first operated internationally from Los Angeles-Tokyo in January 2013.

The aircraft's second international route was due to be Houston-Amsterdam from February 24 to March 30 2013. The aircraft was also due to fly Houston-London daily from March 1 to March 29, and Los Angeles-Shanghai daily from March 30. 

The airline was due to use the aircraft to open a new route, Denver-Tokyo on 31 March 2013.

The 787 is configured with 30 flat-bed seats in BusinessFirst class, 70 Economy Plus and 113 economy seats.

The aircraft features the “Boeing Sky” interior, bigger windows, larger overhead bins, increased cabin humidity, a more natural cabin pressure and enhanced ventilation systems.

United has 50 Dreamliners on order – 25 for United Airlines and 25 that were ordered by Continental Airlines, which it merged with.
