Turkish Airlines (airline code TK), is the national airline of Turkey. It is based at Istanbul's Ataturk airport, but also has hubs at Istanbul's secondary Sabiha Gokcen airport and Ankara's Esenboga International airport.

Turkish Airlines was set up in 1933 by the Ministry of Defence, but was privatised in 1990. The Turkish government retains a 49% stake. Turkish Airlines and Lufthansa have a joint partnership in a charter subsidiary, SunExpress.

Turkey is unusual in that its main air hub is not in the country's capital, Ankara, but in the old capital of Istanbul. Turkish Airlines serves more than 200 destinations and is one of the world's fastest-growing carriers.

Construction of an airport to the east of Istanbul is now underway which Turkey hopes will become the world's busiest. When open in 2017 it will be capable of handling 90 million passengers. When fully operational, it will be able to handle 150 million passengers.

Turkey and its airline hope that its home market of 75 million people and its position near the Middle East and Asia will bring it the passenger numbers it forecasts.

Turkish Airlines is a member of the Star Alliance and recently placed one of the industry's largest orders for 117 new aircraft for delivery by 2015. This will take its fleet to around 375.
