Thomas Cook Airlines' Premium cabin has been put into the same tax bracket as business or first class by the UK government, meaning that it attracts the same rate of Air Passenger Duty, i.e. £120 on a flight to the US and £170 on Caribbean services.

Consequently, Thomas Cook has stopped offering Premium class on flights from the UK, but will offer it for a £50 upgrade option on the return to the UK, when APD does not apply. Your £50 buys you the two inches of extra legroom. Bear in mind, however, that the 35-inch seat pitch you get is three inches less than scheduled airlines' equivalent product.

On the outbound journey from the UK, the premium section seats are allocated randomly free of charge. In both directions, whether you pay to upgrade or not, the normal economy in-flight service is offered.

Bear in mind that if you haven't paid to reserve your seats, you may be randomly allocated one of the more spacious seats at the front of the aircraft.

For those that do take up the £50 upgrade option on the way back, Thomas Cook's premium product does not quite match scheduled airlines' premium economy cabins, but it comes at a much cheaper price.

The separate cabin is configured 2-3-2, like normal premium economy cabins, and seats are wider than those in economy.

I hope I have remembered flight number correctly. We flew out from Manchester on 8th December 2012. The flight was smooth and uneventful. We had booked extra legroom seats on the way out and they were worth the extra money. The food was of a very good standard and very tasty. The staff on this flight were outstanding, far more professional than some... more

We flew LGW to Mexico Nov 2012, part of the prelimiinary confusion caused by the on-line seat booking system being inactive until the last minute resulted in our outbound flight seating being "take what you are given and hope for the best" As it turned out we found ourselves seated in "Premier" Class. The distinction between "Premier" class and standard cabin can be... more
