Sri Lankan Airlines (airline code UL) is the national carrier of Sri Lanka, based at Colombo's Bandaranaike Airport. However from winter 2013 the airline will operate its European flights to and from the new Hambantota airport in the south of the island.
The Sri Lankan government has a controlling stake in the airline. Emirates had a 43.6% shareholding in the carrier until July 2010, when it sold the stake back to the Sri Lankan government. A 10-year management contract for the airline also ended then. The remaining share in Sri Lankan Airlines, just over 5%, is owned by employees.
Sri Lanka's tourism industry means that the airline has good connections with several major European cities. It also serves the Middle East, India, China, Japan and several Asian destinations. Sri Lankan also operates non-stop from London to Male in the Maldives.
Sri Lankan Airlines' frequent flier programme is known as FlySmiLes.
