Qatar Airways (airline code QR) is the national carrier of Qatar, founded in 1993. Since a new management team came on board in 1997 it has become one of the world's fastest-growing airlines, driven by the wealth of the natural gas-rich state of Qatar.

The airline was due to move its base to the new Hamad International Airport in April 2013. The carrier was one of the first to fly the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and was due to receive the A380 double-decker aircraft in 2014.

As part of an aggressive fleet expansion programme Qatar expects its fleet size to grow to 120 by 2013.

Qatar Airways is jointly owned by the Government of the State of Qatar (50 per cent) and private shareholders (50 per cent). It will join oneworld by 2014, becoming the first major Middle East carrier to be a member of an alliance.
