So many memories - This is the way that flying used to be like. - Just felt so special from start to finish. No use in saying anything else, as I am still on a high.
I have reviewed this airline before and they were as excellent as ever.
The only thing that has changed since I last flew with them is that they now have a lovely new lounge. It is cool and elegant with a most impressive array of food and drink.
CHECK IN check in only took a couple of minutes, there was a couple in front of me and around five people behind me. The agent was very nice.
LOUNGE - The SAS lounge was a little bit disappointing in some ends, but after reading reviews about it I personally thought it was quite good, considering it hosted not just oman air. OK selection of food/drink, great internet on iMacs, comfortable seating.
BOARDING- I left duty free at around 21:35 as it was a 10-15 minute walk, i got there at about 20:50 and i was shocked to see the economy que stretching miles but the business and first class was empty.
I felt bad but walked straight through onto the plane. I received a very warm welcome, and I was immediately shown to my seat, which was in the first business cabin, which only has 8 seats.
My jacket was taken and i was offered some orange juice, arabic coffee and dates. I skipped the coffee but I did try the dates ( i've never dried em' before) and they were lush.
I had just enough time to explore the seat, there was only two seats not taken so i wasn't embarrassed. I didn't love the buddy seat, but it was a clever little idea. The storage was great, i managed to fit a few things in their (i carry light..) and i even asked if i could look at first class and i was allowed as their was only 3 people, as long as i didn't get in their way. It was different, but personally prefer business!!
Once airborne, pj's amenity kit and menu's were handed out. it was really nice to see that they put so much effort into insuring the most relaxing flight. The nice F/A came round to take my order, then once she left i went to the toilets (clean, good products) and tried the facial cream and lip balm. they worked wonders on my skin!
I sat back down and managed to get around 3/4 the way through my first film when my food came, i was impressed with the table settings! food was mouth-watering. nothing more to say. that's all i can :) after the food, the F/A came round and asked if i wanted to get my bed done up, i accepted and got changed into the soft and good pj's in the toilets.
SLEEPING WAS THE BEST SLEEP I'VE EVER HAD ON A PLANE ! woke up and had 30 mins to landing, breakfast was quick but tasty. landed 5 mins ahead.
Colombo-Muscat-Paris Business class
As I feared a traffic jam for the 1 hour taxi ride from my hotel, which never materialized, I arrived early at the airport. I used online check-in which I found to be a simple process.
I was the only paying passenger at the business check-in which went smoothly and very fast. The crew was checking-in at the same time and I recognised the purser from my arrival flight, so I had a chat while one of the pilots was checking in his family at the business counter.
Oman Air uses the Sri Lanka Airways lounge which was spacious and had ample seating, food and drinks. However we were called to board very early.
On the 4-hour wait for the transfer in Muscat, the very new Oman air exclusive lounge was at our service with very attentive staff, lots of food and drinks served by a very efficient attendants. A blanket and amenity bag was on offer for a short sleep.
Unfortunately, they do not have a separate space to relax, and the chatter from fellow passengers was very loud.
In Colombo there were few people at the gate, so boarding was fast. However in Oman business passengers have to wait for all the other passengers to take the bus, before taking a separate one.
Once we arrived at the plane we were not allowed to enter by the front stairs, as an official was boarding. So we had to be content with the economy class stairs.
On board, the window seats have window storages boxes which are very handy, but there were only 3 paying customers and 4 pilot family members. However, on the muscat Paris stretch, all seats were taken with about 50% being airline family passengers.
On both legs the flights went on time and with no hassle. Coffee and dates or drinks were offered.
1- 2 -1 configuration in a front and back cabin. The front cabin seemed more secluded.
The seat was very hard, so I padded it with lots of cushions taken from empty seats.
Nevertheless it is a very generous seat and as good as other airlines' first.
Large screen TV and lots of choice, as well as paying internet, makes it a very good system. I watched some films with my meal and than dozed off.
On the Colombo Muscat leg an a la cart dinner was served with appetizers. I chose the seafood option of a succulent prawn salad followed by curried prawns for the main course. Then came cheese and a superb selection of wine.
The food was served beautifully on large porcelain plates, like a 3* restaurant, but was hurried along by a FA eager to feed himself.
Very annoyingly, the entire crew walked constantly back and forth from the business class galley, with food items to prepare their meal.
After serving the passengers they all disappeared for an hour, to a feast they prepared in the middle business class galley.
On the Muscat Paris leg, which is a night flight, a too-small snack was served, very elegantly on rectangular glass plates. I was hungry so I asked for seconds, which arrived with no hesitation. Before arrival a very lukewarm and average breakfast was served. This was a choice of quiche, omelet or crepes, plus hot drinks and a breakfast pastry.
They are very polite and helpful, but at times very preoccupied by preparing their dinner. And on a full plane, unable to cope.
Arrival & Transfer:
On both legs disembarkation was quick & smooth and the transit, although long, was bearable.
All together a mixed impression, as although the seating and at times food was as good as first class on other airlines, at other times it was very average.
Although I have direct flights from Dubai to Bangkok, I do not hesitate to fly SEZ/DXB/MCT/BKK just for the pleasure to fly with Oman Air.
The Service is so good! Most of the time you find this kind of service only in First Class with other Airlines.
The Business Class seats are first class standard, and the food is gorgeous. I cannot wait to fly with them again. The only problem is that my trip is longer with two stops but it is still worth doing.
Flew LHR-MCT-BKK Jan 2011
Limo transfer to LHR very nice and then into the SAS lounge in T3 which is adequate if a bit utilitarian. Boarding was quiet by the time I got to the gate. Oman Air's A330s are gorgeous (at least in business). 4 seats abreast where most would have 6. Window seats are the best as they have spacious lockers between the seat and the window.
The service provides all the finer points that most other airlines would reserve for first : sleeper suit, bed turndown, tablecloths with cutlery laid out, crockery course by course, huge amenity kit, etc. etc. The seat is wonderful for sleeping, eating or working but not very good for reclining as the leg rest is badly designed. The service was charming and attentive though their level of English would make me concerned about their handling any difficulty e.g. a delay.
The IFE was very comprehensive. They show a nosewheel camera for take-off and landing and in theory this is available as an IFE channel but it never worked. They also offer in-flight Internet, voice mobile calls and SMS. I tried the SMS on 2 sectors out of 4 but it only worked once and no reason was given.
The food was good though the menu a bit confusing to Westerners as it seems to reflect the "mezze" theme of their caterers. 2 choices of red & white wine plus Champagne. Oman Air's Achilles Heel is Muscat Airport. It is spacious and clean but very last decade! Their lounge is even worse but the shopping is poor so it's hard to know what to do. If you have a Priority Pass then I recommend the Plaza Premium Lounge next door which is much nicer.
MCT has no jetties so all passengers are coached. They handle first & business well by ensuring they are all in their dedicated coach before the stairs are attached for Economy. Their mistake is to try do do the reverse for boarding; they steadfastly refused to allow any business class passengers to board the coach until all economy passengers are gone which meant, for many of us, 25 mins in a crowded spartan gate lounge when we could have been luxuriating on a beautiful plane. The lounge in BKK is Emirates' which is very comfortable and, at that time of the morning, empty of any other airline. Limo transfer in BKK was efficient, if a little devoid of any contact prior to their arrival.
In summary a fantastic plane and product, just a shame it operates through Muscat!
Flight: Muscat to Dubai
Check-in was quick and efficient, while the on-line option was available, the system was down. At the airport there were no queues at the seperate premium check in area. I was issued my boarding pass with the seat I selected when booking as well as invitation to the lounge. Check in staff were very pleasant.
The lounge in Oman was tired to say the least, with sofas that were shabby and in need of smartening up. There were no outward facing windows. Food was basic as an offering and didn't look too appealing, so I gave that a miss. The drinks were served as ordered and there was a good selection of those.
Boarding was great, even though it was by bus, Business Class were boarded onto a seperate bus and taken straight to the plane.
The seat is not as comfortable as I thought, it was slightly reclined so I felt that I was slipping forward. The seat had 40 inch pitch in 4 rows, 2-2 in configuration. Elbow room was more than adequate and room around the seat was plentiful.
The cabin crew took my jacket and put it in the wardrobe before offering an orange juice or water as well as hot or cold towels. They took a menu order and then settled for take off. After take off, dates and arabic coffee were served as well as a cold platter of cheese, meats, etc. Tea and coffee was served and Lanson black label champagne was also offered.
Arrival was on-time and baggage quickly arrived.
Overall, the crew made the flight one of the best ever and the total service offered was great.
