Lufthansa is one of the major players in the first class market and has invested heavily in both the onboard product and supporting ground infrastructure over the past decade.

First class is now available on nearly all Lufthansa’s long-haul flights. The Sleeper seat, standard across the fleet, converts to a fully flat bed with a width of 20.5 inches (54cm).

On the carrier’s B747s, the whole of the upper deck is dedicated to first class, with the seats configured 2-2 and a seat pitch of 90-91 inches (228-234cm), while the A330s and A340s have a 1-2-1 configuration with a pitch of 84 inches (213cm).

In 2004, Lufthansa opened a dedicated First Class Terminal (FCT) at its Frankfurt base and a corresponding lounge at Munich. Services at the FCT include a personal assistant to take care of check-in, private bathrooms and a limousine transfer to the aircraft (click here for a full report).

Lufthansa plans to launch a new first class product on its fleet of Airbus A380s, although the date for this is constantly being revised. This will then be retrofitted on its older aircraft. No details on the new product have yet been released, but the carrier says it will be closer to the concept of the FCT.

Lufthansa Media World, an AVOD in-flight entertainment system, is available in business and first class. Options include a wide selection of movies, 100 CDs, audiobooks, radio programmes, computer games and language courses.

Sao Paulo - Frankfurt and Frankfurt - Mumbai, love the upstairs First, great service, great food, typcal german, right on the mark, seats are a bit old and in 2-2 format but the rest makes up for it, and as for First Class terminal at FRA, worth every cent to fly First, well done Germany, well done Lufthansa, probably my favorite airline, cant wait until they resume... more

Ranerane flew Lufthansa First, on a B747-400 (Config. 1)

Old style seating. Low privacy since seats are upper deck (narrower cabin) 2+2. Overhead lockers are too small for normal carry-on. Very small personal monitors. Cabin service is odd since customers are served according to their Lufthansa FF status not by rows. The whole product is dated. Not worth paying double the price of very good LH business class. more
