KLM was the first carrier in Europe to introduce the new-generation B747-400s in 1989.
It has 22 B747-400s, 17 of which are B747-400 Combi (although depending where you look for this information, the exact number does differ). The combi versions of the 747 have space dedicated to carrying cargo as well as passengers and so seat a maximum of 280 people, although for some configurations, it is even less than that.
KLM has now upgraded its business class product on its B747-400s from the old cradle-style seating (average seat pitch of 60 inches (152cm), width of 21 inches (51cm) and recline of 150 degrees) to the same angled lie-flat seating as on the newer A330-200s and B777-200s. The average seat pitch in World Business Class is 60 inches (152cm), width is 20 inches (50.8cm), and pitch is 175 degrees, while in economy pitch is 31 inches (79cm), width is 18 inches (45cm) and recline is 3.5 inches (9cm).
Boeing 747-400 Combis have a maximum passenger capacity of 280 people (148 less than B747-400s) with 42 in WBC spread across the upper and lower deck, and 238 in economy on the lower deck. The rear end of the plane is dedicated to carrying up to 35 tonnes of cargo.
These aircraft serve routes between Europe and Africa, Mexico, Asia, North America, the Caribbean and South America.
