Etihad Airways (airline code EY) is the flag carrier of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. It was established in 2003 as the national airline of the United Arab Emirates by Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
The airline had a fleet of around 65 aircraft as of mid-2013 but has big expansion plans. This includes taking stakes in other airlines. Etihad also owns nearly 30 per cent of Air Berlin, Europe’s sixth largest carrier; 24 per cent of India's Jet Airways and 40 per cent of Air Seychelles. In 2013 Etihad bought a 49 per cent stake in Air Serbia and 33.3 per cent of Darwin Airline, which was due to be rebranded as Etihad Regional by spring 2014.
Etihad Airways' hub is at Abu Dhabi International airport, from where it has a growing network of international routes.
Etihad announced the largest aircraft order in commercial aviation history at the Farnborough Air Show in 2008 for up to 205 aircraft with 100 firm orders, 55 options and 50 purchase rights. This included 10 Airbus A380s from 2014, 25 A350s between 2017 and 2020 and 35 Boeing 787s between 2014 and 2020.
The carrier's loyalty programme is called Etihad Guest.
