El Al (airline code LY) is the national carrier of Israel, established in 1948. Since the inaugural flight between Geneva and Tel Aviv, the airline has expanded to offer routes to 48 destinations on four continents, between its hub, Ben Gurion International Airport and destinations in Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America, as well as domestic connections to Eilat.

Ownership

The carrier was originally known as Israel Airlines and wholly owned by the State of Israel, but in 2003 it was privatized, with stocks registered for trading on the Tel Aviv exchange. By 2004 it was a mixed company, with the state’s holdings less than 50% and in 2005 the airlines was transferred to private ownership by Knafaim-Arkia Holdings Ltd. As of March 2007, El Al's major shareholders are Knafaim Holdings (42%), the State of Israel (13%), and the Employee Union (8%).
