porkster flew Delta Economy, on a B777-200LR (30/07/2010 20:53)
SYD-LAX-SYD, Our family (4 of us) flew this flight as the second leg in a 3 leg flight.
This international flight of just on 14 hours was long but the service, entertainment and food were up with the best of any long haul flight I've ever had (I fly way too much and from New Zealand every flight is a long haul flight). There was an amazing amount of movies - I didn't get to see all the movies I wanted too (even including the return flight).
The seat was great, I'm 6'2 with a wide butt and I had plenty of leg room although, the person in front of me never reclined their seat (thank you whoever you are)and the seat in front was empty on the return flight. With the return flight being a night flight the seat are not really great for sleeping in, It was patchy sleep at best so there was a lot of movie watching.
The food quality was good and the four of us got what we wanted on both flights. The boarding in Sydney was a shambles. 200 odd people waiting for the departure seating area to open basically blocked the Sydney airport concourse and swamped the nearby shopping outlets. It finally opened about 5 minutes before boarding although security staff had been there for over an hour.
Baggage, well it came off the convey belt at each end without any damage so that was fine. Both flights took off on time and landed early by about 20 minutes.

alwaysairbound flew Delta Economy, on a B767-400ER Transatlantic (10/07/2010 20:30)
On my New York to LHR flight I experienced the "hell" which was Delta. Cramped. Unfriendly service. I have flown long-haul weekly for two years on nearly every airline. Without question, Delta rank worst. The meal was the most disgusting thing I have eaten in my life. An unpleasant, unrepeatable experience.

Delta are great for getting you to bits of the States the other major trans-atlantic carriers don't reach. While they don't offer you all the bells and whistles available on say Virgin or BA (who are only really any good if you want to hit one of the major tourist / business airports) they will provide you a decent service with excellent transfers internally within America.
Usually at the more economic end of the scale cost wise the sevice is efficient and does the job.
Boarding - they have a habit of running the minimal amount of staff and especially in the states the person boarding the first and business class passengers will just sit back and watch as the line gets ever longer for the economy passengers rather than step in and help the boarding go faster (caused us to leave 40 mins late)
Food - Its ok and edible with two choices as standard on the transatlantic flights (pasta and chicken was the choice boths ways).
Entertainment - a number of films free to view, HBO and TV series - but if you are expecting the level of choice of some other airlines you will be dis-appointed. Choice of games (though the system had a habit of crashing and some people on the flight boths ways got stuck with no working screen for the entire flight as it would not re-boot)
Seats - sat up they are fine with enough leg room for not feel cramped but sleeping is a different matter.
Tip - if you feel the cold on planes take your own blanket the ones provided in economy are made of nylon so make you hot and sweaty rather than warm and comfortable.
