DUB-ATL-DFW on Delta DL177 & DL2210
Checked in at approx 6.30am, airport starting to get busy but Delta priority boarding queue had one person in front of us. Check was a generic T2 ground staff who was friendly and informative. We were informed that we could use the lounge and that it was after security but before US preclearance, something I had read in other DUB T2 reviews but is still useful information to be told at check in.
Lounge was simple, check-in desk, approx 90 seats and some cold breakfast foods such as Pain au chocolate, mini croissants, some breakfast cereals, tea, coffee, juices. All in all enough for a snack before flying but not enough choice if you had an extended time in the lounge or required a full meal. It was however quiet and clean and again the staff were friendly and helpful. We were also informed at the desk that a Delta representative would come to the lounge when it was time to go to preclearance and boarding, we left the lounge on our own accord rather than relying on this service incase it did not happen so cannot comment whether it happened or not.
Preclearance was getting busy when we arrived although the queue moved relatively fast to get to two ground staff who were checking boarding cards and whether you were a US national or not, you then got filtered into an appropriate line whether you were US or non US national. In total we were approx 20 minutes from arrival to clearing immigration, all in all much better than past experiences of immigration at US airports where we have found mass queues and long waits.
Overall the DUB T2 experience was good one which we would happily do again (even though we live in Scotland we would happily travel to Dublin for our gateway to the USA) with the preclearance being the real bonus when heading to America especially if you have an onward connecting flight (as we did to DFW) as your luggage is checked all the way to final destination and you land as internal flight passenger so just collect your luggage and leave the airport as all US customs has been cleared in DUB or go to your next gate.
Boarding appeared to be on time with priority given first to the elderly and travellers with young children then those with Sky Priority (Business Elite passengers & Skymiles members of a certain level) as a result we were virtually first on the plane, although upon arrival at the aircraft door the crew seemed a little unprepared for boarding as they were still seemed to be doing some prep work in the cabins but the crew were polite and pleasant.
After a few minutes the Purser approached us and introduced herself and welcomed us onboard by name and took our pre-takeoff drink request which was brought to us within minutes along with our menus to make our main meal selection and hot towels. Our takeoff was delayed by about 20 minutes but the crew came around the cabin to top up our drinks again prior to takeoff.
The seat on this version of A330-200 was the older Northwest Airlines clam shell cradle seat which is not a full lie horizontal seat, it does recline flat but it is at an angle to the floor when done so. Our seats were 1H & 1J which were good as they have no one in front reclining into you and we did not notice any excess noise coming from the galley area. Ideally on this aircraft go for any of the row 1 seats due to having the bulkhead to the front so you gain a little more leg room. The seat filling was a bit flat in places but overall the seat and cabin were clean and tidy and certainly didn’t look like it was several years old.
The seat is was both fairly comfortable but also uncomfortable at the same time depending on the seat position. My partner in 5ft tall and a UK size 12, although a daytime flight she wanted to sleep but found the fully reclined seat position uncomfortable as she would slide down the seat towards the floor as the pop up footrest was too far away from her, she then found that by putting the seat in the cradle reclined position it was much more comfortable. I’m 6ft and 12.5 stone so not huge in build but like my partner found the fully relined position quite uncomfortable as it felt like my back was being arched upwards like a banana while feet and head arching downwards. Again I found the cradle position the most comfortable although the foot rest could have done with being a little further away when extended or for it to have more padding if not as it cut into the back of my legs when it wasn’t in use. Overall though the seat was comfortable once we found our preferred position but I wouldn’t like to do any more than the 8hr flight that we had in them.
The meals were as far as I’m concerned pretty good for eating at 36,000ft with a selection that all meat eaters would be happy with, although if you are vegetarian make sure you pre-book your meal, my partner who is vegetarian thought going by the sample menu online that she would get something easily enough but this was not the case and had to do without a main course which for her was fine as the starter and main course sides were plenty. The wine was free flowing to the point that you had to say no thanks and it was good that the crew remembered what wine you had previously. Cabin announcements were minimal which was a good thing as the speaker system was atrocious as you could hardly make anything out.
Upon arrival at ATL for our transit we disembarked at the international terminal and made our way to the terminal train that runs underground like a spine to the other terminals. Overall we found ATL easy to transit in, one thing though hang on tight when the train is about to move as it sets off with a good bit of pace and also slows rapidly as well.
We had a 2hr layover in ATL so we made our way to the Delta lounge near our gate. Some of the lounges don’t seem to be very clearly sign posted and the entrances are tucked away in small side corridors which seemed a little strange considering ATL is Delta’s home but any ATL personnel we spoke to were extremely helpful. The lounge was quiet with views across the concourse with a selection of cold snacks, hot & cold drinks and a paid for bar for certain alcoholic drinks. Overall ok for a short stay.
Our ATL to DFW flight was, well fine, slightly late leaving due to two passengers having the same seat, once it was sorted the purser came around all business passengers taking drink orders which was then served with an option of snacks in the form of crisps, nuts & chocolate.
The MD-88 seats are more economy comfort style regarding recline and legroom but for a 2hr hop to DFW more than enough. Arrival in DFW was simple, off the plane, through a set of doors, a short wait for our luggage then off to our hotel.
Overall we were happy with Delta although we were a little apprehensive flying with a US carrier, ok the hard product on this route/aircraft maybe not as good as say Delta, BA or American Airlines from LHR, the cabin crew were good but a few shortcomings but then is that just the American style of service?
Would we fly through DUB to the US again? – Yes. Would we fly business with Delta again? - Yes
I checked in at the old T1 in Madrid, no queue and a pleasant check in agent. I then went to the lounge which was ok but nothing spectacular. Very friendly staff at the gate and I boarded plane and was welcomed and directed towards my seat. I wasn’t offered a drink, unlike others, so asked for a glass of champagne! I was very disappointed in the seats. I had last flown long haul with DL 10 years ago and the seats looked exactly the same. They were like an old fashioned business seat from the late 90s. They were not lie flat at all and I would say they were more cradle type. I sat next to the boyfriend of one of the cabin crew and there seemed to be a lot of DL staff or friends of travelling in business.
Lunch was served and the starter of salmon was excellent. Soup was served along with the starter but was lukewarm, and the bread arrived after I had finished! The chicken was not so good and came with a sort of potato puree, with lumps – yuk! Ice cream was offered for dessert. Champagne and wine were free flowing for those who wanted it.
I don’t use the entertainment so decided to try and sleep. After a while I woke up and had taken unwell so slept for most of flight. I woke up briefly when the afternoon snack of Cheeseburger and chips was being served which didn’t help matters, but managed to sleep until 15 minutes before landing. One of the cabin crew noticed I was ill and asked if she could do anything. She arranged a wheelchair for me on arrival and stayed quite some time with me until the wheelchair arrived.
Overall it was not a bad flight. The seats desperately need updating but maybe Madrid is a low priority route as I am sure on the LHR route they have a fantastic business class. The food was ok and other pax seemed happy with the entertainment. The best thing is the service, the cabin crew were hard working, friendly, and always present in the cabin and I would like to thank the lady who took care of me.
I will fly Delta again but look forward to the new version of Business Elite.

I flew on the very old 767-300 from CDG to DTW. I was surprised to found such an old airplane with an old Business class.
Never the less, the service was great and food really good.
Screen were very small, but the headsets are great, and help enjoy the travel by keeping the sound down (if only Air france could equip Business class with Bose too).
So overall, good service in a very old plane.
Had an excellent flight from Hong Kong to Tokyo and back. Great seats and excellent crew. Also had some of the best food I have eaten on a plane on the return journey. This was my first flight with Delta but it will not be my last.
I've been flying business class for over thirty years, and Delta's 777LR service from Detroit to Inchon, Korea was outstanding.
I love the new seat, and plan to schedule all of my future flights to Asia on this plane. I fly United sometimes, but have now sworn off their old, tired 777's to Asia and South America. I don't know how they get away with charging full price for those tired planes and dinosaur service.
Delta is doing it right. I can see that a tall person might not like the new seat, but since I'm of average height and weight, I fit into it nicely. The food and wine service was very good as well.
Skyteam lounge ¬– pleasant, spacious, plenty of seating and available work stations. A decent coffee & bar etc, nice hot & cold breakfast buffet, which got changed to lunch while I was there. But the Clarins spa wasn’t open for complimentary treatments, because the therapist was “on a course”, I was told.
(A welcome touch on return journey was 1 hour at Yotel cabin in T4 to shower & freshen up before meetings in town).
Seating: I was in 7D – a neat staggered layout means you get window and aisle, with no-one beside you. The window seats (A & D) definitely like the best bet – of the D side, the odd numbers are slightly nicer as you’re by the window, with your side table between you and the aisle. Does go to full-flatbed, but the cubby hole for your feet is a little cramped. Lots of space of magazines, drinks, work stuff etc on the table beside me
Service: cabin staff very friendly, not as slick and efficient as other airlines. I was given champagne (after asking) before takeoff and my coat taken and hung-up. At one point during the flight I had to ring my call bell three times before anyone eventually came to see me. And a stewardess tipped someone’s drink all over me. Luckily most of it went on the blanket – she was extremely apologetic.
IFE: the on-demand system kept breaking down and had to be re-booted twice. Fairly good choice of movies, but sound was lousy – distracting crackling. I ended up watching ‘The Killing’ on my iPad.
Food and drink: Some good French wine, the salad was nice & fresh, everything reasonable but not exceptional. The hot breakfast bagel was a mistake, I should’ve had the granola.
Punctuality: I’ve given a high mark for this because, after the usual shambolic traffic jam taxiing round Heathrow for 45 minutes & taking off nearly 1 hour late, Delta made up for it & we landed nearly on time. Of course we lost it all again schlepping through the special hell of US customs/immigration at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta airport – but that’s not Delta’s fault!
Baggage: no big deal, but on the flight home (back at LHR), myself and a couple of colleagues’ bags with the big yellow business-class priority tags resplendent on them, were practically last on the carousel.
This flight was from LAS to ATL and was a 3 hour flight. This first class was just fine for a 3 hour flight, the foot room was fine, had great width and pitch. Had personal TV's, a meal and snacks, the service was good!
I flew from MSP to HNL an eight and a half hour flight and truthfully i did not want it to end. I'm not lying, with lie-flat seats, personal TV's (AVOD), and lumbar support that could be made to give you a massage. There were two meals on this flight that were fairly excellent. Snacks and drinks were also given on this flight, then after dinner a ice cream sunday was made for us. I was able to watch two movies, watch TV and play games during this flight. The flight attendants almost did not take a break the entire time, they worked so hard, and were very gracious of the thanks I gave them after we deplaned.
My wife and I have nothing but praise for our overnight Business Elite Class flight from Atlanta to Manchester UK, in particular the attention of the hostesses was exemplary.
We enjoyed the wine (far superior to that served in coach class), the food and the seating, despite facing the bulkhead.
Sleeping was good but could be improved still.
I commended the staff on its ability to anticipate one's needs, overall a thoroughly enjoyable experience, to be recommended.
Arrived in good time having checked in on line in the hotel, very short queue and bags were through checked to London, as we were in transit in Atlanta. Were told we could use the sky team lounge as were connecting on to an international flight. Security was slow but the staff were polite and thorough. After shops settled in the lounge. The lounge was spacious with good views of the runaway, there was a reasonable ranges of snacks and beverages, but reading matter was poor. Headed to the gate and boarded promptly.
Seating was 2 2 2 we were on the right hand side, a pre departure drink was offered. Push back was delayed over 30 minutes due to problems loading the cargo, the captain kept us up dated. Lunch was a choice of chicken salad or beef sandwich, I asked if something else could be found as I don't eat red meat, I was asked if I ate dairy or seafood, but reminded about ordering a vegetarian option. My experience of vegetarian meals in America made me reluctant to do this after previous experiences.
Once airborne drinks orders were taken and my meal was a good selection of cheeses with salad and desert. Drinks were offered and the crew proved polite and helpful. We didn't really make up the time and arrived around 30 minutes late.
One of the flight attendants went around all the business class seats and thanked us all for flying with Delta. Disembarkment was prompt.
Arrived in good time for check in the day after the explosives were found at East Midlands Airport.
Though check in slow as there was a single member of staff checking us in, who was trying to get additional help, ESTA checks were also completed.
Through fast track and after some shopping settled in the Skyteam lounge, there was a plentiful amount of food and drinks.
Boarding had just started at gate 9, a small further security check and were welcomed on board.
We were seated in the middle in a 1-2-1 formation. Champagne was offered and meal requests taken.
Push back was about 5 minutes early and following a short taxi take off was about 15 minutes later, good by Heathrow standards.
Warm nuts and a gin and tonic was enjoyed before the lunch which consisted of scallops, salad and a filling pasta with tomato sauce and parmesan. Ice cream and other deserts including cheese was offered. Wine choice were a New Zealand sauvignon and an American Chardonnay.
After lunch relaxed in the fully flat bed and had a good doze (I don't usually sleep well on planes), but missed the hot cookie which my friend enjoyed. A second meal was offered which was a plentiful salad with goats cheese (the chicken was removed as requested).
The service was pleasant, although my friend had a very attentive female attendant who kept topping up her champagne.
Arrival was slightly early and we exited from the front to a short queue at immigration. Priority tagged bags arrived early and we headed for Manhattan.
