China Eastern Airlines (airline code MU), based in Shanghai is one of China's biggest airlines. Its main hub is at Shanghai's Pudong international airport, but it also operates from the city's secondary Hongqiao airport.
Ownership
China Eastern was set up by Shanghai's local government authority in 1988. It subsequently took over several smaller airlines and floated on the Shanghai, Hong Kong and New York stock markets in 1997. The carrier is still majority owned by the Chinese government and has attracted the interest of several suitors keen to take a minority stake, notably Singapore Airlines.
Route Network
With more than 200 aircraft, China Eastern has an extensive network throughout China, Asia and Australia, plus a handful of European services, including Frankfurt and London, although the latter has been suspended until March 29 2010. In total, it serves more than 330 domestic destinations and connects 110 international cities.
Other Information
China Eastern's fleet is entirely made up of modern Boeing, Airbus, Bombardier and Embraer aircraft.
