American Airlines (airline code AA) is a US-based airline founded in 1930 (originally as American Airways), based in Dallas, Texas. It is one of the world's largest carriers.
American Airlines' parent company is AMR Corporation, a company listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
American Airlines' main hubs are at Dallas/Fort Worth, Chicago, Miami, Los Angeles and New York JFK and La Guardia. It operates an extensive network worldwide and domestically.
The airline sought bankruptcy protection in November 2011 to allow it to reorganise in the face of heavy losses, but exited this on December 9 2013 and merged with US Airways at the same time.
The merger created the world’s largest airline on most measures, giving oneworld the leading alliance position in the USA, the world’s largest air travel market. The new American serves more than 330 destinations in more than 50 countries, carrying 190 million passengers a year on a fleet of 1,500 aircraft.
American Airlines' frequent flier programme is called AAdvantage. The carrier was a founding member of the oneworld airline alliance.
