Air Berlin (airline code AB) is Germany's second largest carrier after Lufthansa.
Air Berlin is a publically-listed company, with over 60 per cent of shares held by German shareholders. It owns 49.9 per cent of Niki, the Austrian charter airline, 49 per cent of Belair, a Swiss charter carrier and took over German charter and budget carrier LTU in 2007, taking Air Berlin into long-haul for the first time. Etihad Airways became the airline's largest shareholder in December 2011 when it increased its stake in the carrier to 29.21 per cent.
Air Berlin's main hub is at Berlin's Tegel airport, but its acquisition of LTU brought it a large base at Dusseldorf. It also has a base at Nuremberg and operates a budget hub from Palma, Majorca.
Air Berlin operates more than 170 aircraft to over 160 destinations. Its loyalty scheme is known as Topbonus.
