Aer Lingus (airline code EI) is Ireland's flag carrier, based at Dublin airport. It also operates from Shannon and Cork and opened a new base at Belfast International airport in December 2007.
Ownership
Founded by the Irish Government in April 1936, the airline was privatised and floated on the Irish and London Stock Exchanges on October 2, 2006.
Route Network
Aer Lingus has an extensive network from Ireland to mainland Europe and the UK. It also flies several routes to the US.
Other Information
Aer Lingus was in danger of collapsing until Willie Walsh, now British Airways chief executive, transformed the then state-owned carrier, changing its European services to a budget airline formula. The transformation led to privatisation, which allowed Ryanair to invest in Aer Lingus in the hope of an eventual complete takeover.
Aer Lingus offers a single economy class service on all short-haul routes, and
a two class Premier and Economy service on all long-haul routes. The short-haul fleet consists of 6 Airbus A321s and 27
Airbus A320s. The long-haul fleet is nine Airbus A330 aircraft,
with six new Airbus A330s due for delivery from 2009.
